Bengals rookie guard Jackson Carman was one of the eight offensive linemen head coach Zac Taylor chose to dress for Sunday's opener at Paul Brown Stadium against old friend Mike Zimmer's Vikings.

Another rookie guard, D'Ante Smith, didn't dress and neither did backup tackle Fred Johnson. With Johnson out, that means backup tackle Isaiah Prince figures to make his Bengals debut with some special teams snaps. Prince, who opted out last season, didn't appear for the Bengals in his rookie year in 2019 after he started two games for the Dolphins. Johnson has made seven starts for the Bengals, six of them last season.

Also not dressed was rookie defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin. That may mean the Bengals are trying to make sure Vikings 1,500-yard running back Dalvin Cook doesn't get loose on the edge in Minnesota's wide zone. They opted to dress defensive end Wyatt Ray, picked up on waivers from Tennessee after playing in his first four NFL games last season.

Because they didn't elevate anyone from the practice squad, the Bengals only had to deactivate five. Injured cornerback Trae Waynes (hamstring) and cornerback Nick McCloud, picked up on waivers last week, were the other two.

SLANTS AND SCREENS: The Bengals are looking to win their first NFL opener at PBS since 2007 in a Monday Night win over the Ravens, one year before Zimmer became the Bengals defensive coordinator.

Paul Guenther, who succeed Zimmer in that job and was DC for the final four seasons of 14-year run he was on the Bengals staff, made the pregame rounds as the Vikes senior defensive assistant. Working the game out of the press box, "Paulie G," planned to drop by Bengals president Mike Brown's suite to say hello. Former Bengals cornerback Leon Hall, who still lives in town, visited Zimmer and Guenther at the Vikings hotel Saturday night .,..

Another old friend in Vikes linebacker Nick Vigil won't have his valued, versatile mate, Anthony Barr. Barr is inactive with a knee injury.
